Construction on Highway 95/Main Street

Originally published in April, project Delayed to June.

Excuse our dust as we finish up making downtown Stillwater even more enjoyable for you!

Although the Hwy 36 St. Croix river crossing bridge opened to traffic on Wed, Aug. 2, 2017, additional work remains to complete the project. Find the current projects here: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/stcroixcrossing/

Hwy 95/South end of Main Street will be one of these projects starting June 11th. To avoid road closure or single lane traffic, take the detour from highway 36/Manning to enter downtown via the north on Hwy 96. Here’s the details: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/hwy95stillwater/.

Good news is that a parking lot is under construction for people to park and walk over the new bridge, the Loop Trail will be 3/4 complete this year, and there will be access to Oasis Cafe and Stillwater River Boatsduring the 3 week period!

New Electric Cruiser Bike Rental

Summer is here so it’s time to get outside and explore the trails in Stillwater. With three connecting trails – St. Croix Loop Trail that goes over the new bridge, the Brown’s Creek Trail and the Gateway State Trail that connects to St. Paul, Minnesota  – Stillwater is a beautiful destination for a summer getaway.

Bike Rental Location at Gateway Trailside

Didn’t bring your bike on your travels or perhaps you need a little warm up before you try to bike miles with the use of your weak winter muscles? Gateway Trailside has a solution for you! Imagine starting your bike trail route at an adorable and very tasty food truck along the Gateway State Trail where they now have electric cruiser bikes for rent. They are stylish, comfortable and easy. Easy to figure out how to operate and they make it easy to cover a longer trip should you desire. Tired of pedaling? Simply kick on the motor for a boost and take a break. Let the wind flow through your hair (under your helmet of course) and open your eyes to see the beauty of prairies, woods, creeks, bridges, golf courses and the historic riverfront downtown of Stillwater.

Duluth Junction, Intersection of Brown’s Creek and Gateway Trails

You could continue on the Gateway State Trail, but just a 7 mile ride from Gateway Trailside and you’ll be downtown Stillwater, so we recommend a turn onto the Brown’s Creek trail when you hit Duluth Juction and a coast downhill into downtown.

Depending on how many times you stop to take pictures or read the history displays you may arrive downtown in as quick as a half hour. Lock up your bikes and spend the day browsing Main Street boutiques and candy shops. Grab lunch and a cool drink on a patio or enjoy a picnic together in riverfront Lowell Park while you watch the boats go by on the St. Croix River.

Interactive Educational Displays Along Brown’s Creek Trail

More about these hip cycles…The electric bikes are Pedego brand. A Pedego is just like a regular bike – only better. You can pedal normally (or not) and get power when you want it. The battery will last for 40 miles of moderate use with average size person. You have the freedom to go farther and faster, and to conquer hills and headwinds with ease. It feels like being a kid again! (verified via personal experience). Rent for 2, 4, or 8 hours. If you want to give yourself time downtown Stillwater, definately go for the 4 hour rental.

Picnic Downtown Stillwater

Picnic Lunch from Gateway Trailside

For rentals longer than 4 hours, Gateway Trailside is offering a limited time ‘picnic deal’ where they’ll pack a healthy picnic for you that fits perfectly in your cruiser bike’s basket!

How sweet is that? Date idea…guys and gals! This is very thoughtful and special way to spend the day together don’t you think? mother/daughter, father/son, grandparents, girlfriends…this fun idea is great for all adults (16yr old min age). Online rental is preferred, so plan ahead to reserve your bikes. If you prefer to have the bikes delivered to your hotel or Bed & Breakfast, with prior notice this can also be arranged. We hope you enjoy this experience while in Stillwater as we always recommend a dose of nature on your visit!

New History Walking Tour App Knows Your Location

Experience A Time Tunnel Through Stillwater Minnesota’s History: Lens Flare Stillwater Launches Additional New Free APP With New Locations
Press Release by Robert Molenda, LensFlare Stillwater founder

Lens Flare Stillwater, a not for profit project funded by The Stillwater Area Foundation announces its newest FREE APP and Web Site to visitors, tourists and residents. This project won The Great Idea competition in 2016. The project objective was to provide APPs for your mobile devices that enable you to carry the history of Stillwater in your pocket while traveling through a geo-location time tunnel.

Imagine that you are standing in front of the South Hill Stairwell in Downtown Stillwater. You go to the www.lensflarestillwater.org web site and activate one of the FREE APPS. The APP senses your geo-location and when you are inside the geo-fence of this historical location, the device is triggered to show a photo of how that same location appeared at some previous time in the past. In this case, the South Stairwell location will show John Runk Collection Photos taken in the early 1850’s and later years. In addition to the photos, there are text and audio narratives. When you walk into the geo-fence of other nearby historic locations, new photos and information automatically appear on your mobile device. There are nineteen locations to visit and most feature the audio trigger when you enter the geo-fence using the Newest Apple iOS APP.

The other, browser-based FREE APPs for any mobile device, are linked to the web site for a seamless transition from one to the other for additional historical information. In this way, we connect to Google Maps 360 to see the same location as it appears today, along with other surprises. The APP is unique and the combination of the APP with the web site is synergistic and interactive for telling stories in a different way.

These FREE APPs enhance your experience while actually visiting Stillwater. To experience historic Stillwater from an armchair, people use the web site by itself.

The software for the APP is powered by LodeStar, an authoring tool provided by LodeStar Learning Systems, a Minnesota Company that sells learning software to Educators. Director for Online Learning at Metropolitan State University, Mr. Robert Bilyk says,”To view the town of Stillwater through the lens of the past, the group has combined the arts of storytelling and photography with the new technology of mobile phones and geo-location-aware applications.”

Dr. Molenda, a retired 3M research manager and marketer heads up a small volunteer group of history buffs who provide the content, narratives and populate the software fields for this project. “The content is a tribute to Mr. John Runk, an early photographer who collected and archived his and other photos of Stillwater for historical purposes”, says Molenda. “From what I know of him, he would have felt right at home with this project.”

Stillwater Bridge Named Best View 2018

City Pages names the St. Croix Crossing Bridge Best View for 2018
From City Pages:
St. Croix Crossing begins on Highway 36 as you head east, leaving Oak Park Heights and soaring toward St. Joseph, Wisconsin. But unlike the imposing freeway bridges of yesteryear, the Minnesota Department of Transportation decided this one would be pedestrian- and bike-friendly. And so it is. The walkway soars 150 feet above the St. Croix River, a National Scenic Riverway. That designation has largely prevented the view from becoming an onslaught of business signs and billboards. Instead, you’re treated to a spectacular vine of blue running miles to the north, accompanied by dense green foliage that obscures most of the commercial development. The St. Croix is a state treasure, and the new bridge allows you to witness it in all its majesty, free of charge.

What great timing as the St. Croix river celebrates 50 years since being named a wild and scenic nationally protected river. Be sure to include a bike, walk, or segway tour across this bridge or a river cruise under to see the spectacular St. Croix River Valley views. A parking lot near Sunnyside Marina is currently under construction, but for now you can park along the water treatment plant frontage road at the Minnesota side base of the bridge. Eventually, there will be a 5 mile loop trail from downtown Stillwater over both the historic lift bridge and new St. Croix Crossing bridge to Wisconsin. For the 2018 season, about 3/4 is complete – find maps on our website. Bring your own bike, pack the camera, and stop to enjoy the three lookout points with historical information.
