The Cities of Stillwater and Oak Park Heights are home to a multitude of beautiful hiking and biking trails. As part of a comprehensive trail system, there are walking paths throughout both cities.  The paths wind through the neighborhoods and go past the City Hall.  Many of the paths connect to parks.  The paths have blacktop or gravel for your walking and biking pleasure.

FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played with a regular soccer ball at a golf course on shortened holes and the players kick the ball into a 21-inch diameter cup. The rules for FootGolf largely correspond to the rules of golf. The Oak Glen FootGolf Course consists of 18-holes and is a par 68 layout constructed throughout the Executive Golf Course. The FootGolf Course is open 7 days a week and tee times are recommended. FootGolf takes about half the amount of time as golf does so it is a perfect way to get the whole family involved – golfers can golf while non-golfers can footgolf. You are encouraged to bring your own soccer balls and tennis shoes or soccer shoes are required.

Access the food truck via the Gateway Trail near mile marker 15 between hwy 96 and Lansing Ave. If you are on the Brown’s Creek trail, it’s located just north of the intersection of the Gateway and Brown’s Creek trail.

The recently acquired 6.4 mile Brown’s Creek Trail now connects with the Gateway Trail enabling trail users to bike from Main Street in downtown Stillwater near the St. Croix River to the Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul. The Gateway-Brown’s Creek Trail is a multi-use trail providing biking, rollerblading, running, walking, horseback riding (starting at Pine Point Park, not downtown) and cross-country skiing (gateway only) to trail users year round. Start cycling downtown Stillwater at the trail-head on the north end of Main Street by the old train depot where a parking lot, map, and water fountains welcome you!

 

The Gateway State Trail is heavily used by thousands of people all year long. The former paved Soo Line rail bed runs 18 miles from St. Paul to Pine Point County Park in Stillwater offering mostly flat, scenic riding. From St. Paul to Interstate 694, the trail travels through an urban setting that joins numerous parks and other local and regional trail connections, including the Phalen-Keller Regional Park and the Bruce Vento Regional Trail. Many trail users are surprised to find rural landscapes so close to the metro area. The Gateway State Trail provides access to downtown St. Paul and the State Capitol Complex, yet also takes you past parks, lakes, wetlands, and fields.

Stillwater’s lift bridge (1931) spans the St. Croix River between Stillwater and Houlton, WI and is one of three remaining lift bridges in the U.S. today. Construction is underway to build a new bridge nearby and use the Historic Lift Bridge as a walking/biking bridge. Check out the lift bridge schedule to see when you can watch it go up/down!

HISTORIC STAIRS

Downtown Stillwater was built on hills (much like San Francisco) with the lowest level being Main Street and the St. Croix river. Did you know that Stillwater has five sets of historic steps that you can climb for exercise, fun or for the view? The steps are marked on the map within the Stillwater Visitor Guide: Main Street Stairs · Chestnut Street Stairs · Pioneer Park Stairs · Triangle Park Stairs · South Hill Stairs. Each set has about 100 steps in a very steep vertical climb. Wind your way through downtown to find them all for a sense of accomplishment and about a 3 mile walk. History Tour – Secrets in the Landscape

People have long used Stillwater’s landscape to their advantage and shaped it to their needs. St. Croix Loop Trail

The St. Croix Crossing Bike/Pedestrian Loop Trail (MNDOT Fact Sheet) project will include construction of the trail from downtown Stillwater’s historic lift bridge over to Wisconsin and back across the new St. Croix Crossing bridge into downtown Stillwater along the river.  As of August 3, the historic lift bridge is closed for rennovations (hoping to open Spring 2019) and the new bridge is open. Portions of the Loop Trail are complete (Progress Map) so you can enjoy a walk or bike ride over the new bridge for amazing views of the valley. Park near at Houlton Elementary school (70 Cty Rd E, Houlton, WI54082) on the Wisconsin side or downtown Stillwater in city lots. Here is a Loop Trail Map of the project once completed. The southern portion is mostly done, but note that at on both ends there are unpaved portions. The best part to ride for now, is over the new St. Croix Crossing bridge. For an even longer route, ride through downtown Stillwater to connect with the Brown’s Creek State Trail on the north end. Segway tours are also available over the bridge!

Thor’s Hard Cider

Thor’s Hard Cider is authentically made from fresh-pressed, full-strength, locally-grown apples with no preservatives. The entire process happens at our Stillwater, MN orchard. The apples are grown, harvested, pressed and brewed at Aamodt’s Apple Farm, a fourth-generation apple farm. This first cider is named after our our great-grandfather and founder of Aamodt’s Apple Farm.

Three Rivers Wine Trail

Minnesota’s first wine trail and is comprised of five of Minnesota’s oldest wineries all located within the Saint Croix, Mississippi, and Cannon River Valleys. Wine lovers can spend a day or a weekend on the trail visiting wineries amid lush valley scenery and sampling award-winning, locally produced wines. Stillwater’s proximity as the central point along the trail and home to two of the wineries (St. Croix Vineyards, Northern Vineyards) makes it a perfect place to stop, explore, and stay overnight.

Minnesota’s first electric Tuk-Tuk is a 3-wheel motorized people moving machine. Be on the look out for this new free service (tip the drivers) downtown. More details, website, and app scheduler coming soon. This is the 2nd time in Minnesota’s history that an electric mode of transportation has started in Stillwater. The first was the same day (June 27th) in 1889 (127 years ago) when Minnesota’s first electric street railway started operations in Stillwater.

Wahoo Adventures

Wahoo! Adventures offers guided 90 minute kayaking tours every Tuesday morning at 8:30am.  Make reservations by calling the Stillwater Trolley at 651.430.0352 – they will provide a 5 minute trolley ride to meet your guide.  You can also book your own private kayak or bicycle tour for 2 – 20 people by calling us directly.  Enjoy the best the St. Croix Valley has to offer on the river or on the local bicycle trails.  In the winter we can get you to a local state or county park for a snowshoe adventure.  We provide all the gear, maps, guidance, and inspiration you may need!  No experience necessary.

WARDEN’S HOUSE MUSEUM

Warden’s House Museum open for tours May through October  Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 5pm. The cost is $5 per adult, $1 for children. Built in 1853 as the residence of the Minnesota Territorial Prison warden. Over time there were thirteen wardens that lived in the house until 1914.  This home was built next to the first Stillwater Prison. Group tours arranged year-round.

Future plans: As a professional theatre in the St. Croix Valley, The 300-seat Zephyr Theatre at the old train depot will produce productions of the highest quality that are visually, acoustically, and artistically beautiful. We will create and revive classic musicals and plays, while incorporating music, musical cultures, and dance into the live arts in meaningful ways.
